Mayflower Brewing Company
Summer Rye Ale - PLYMOUTH MA - 3.8%ABV
by Derek Brewlander | August 9th, 2012
This Plymouth, MA brewed 3.8% ABV rye beer actually reminds me more of a pilsner than a typical rye beer, which is not a bad thing at all. This beer pours an extremely light golden/straw color with just a slight touch of green. (not in a gross way!) It has a solid 2 finger head with outstanding lacing as it settles and is drunk. The smell is very mild, with a bit of dry hops, yeast, spices, and of course earthy rye. It is a beautiful aroma, just a bit on the light side, which however is pretty common among summer beers. It has an extremely pleasant taste to it, very light and delicate; it has a slight hop bitterness, peppery rye and hints of lemon and wheat. This beer has a great feel to it – well carbonated, light bodied and extremely refreshing. Again, the taste is a bit mild, but it is extremely pleasant and great for summer. Overall while this beer is lighter than my usual fare, I found it to have an extremely pleasant light flavor and very refreshing. For a lower alcohol beer, it had very solid flavor and like the name implies, it is perfect to have on a hot summer day or night – certainly an impressive brew from Mayflower! So come on down to Depot Liquors and grab a 6 pack because August is already off to a hot start, and I think you all could use a nice refreshment. Cheers!
